Every vehicle should have a basic emergency kit in the glove compartment or trunk. These kits might include a pen and paper to document the accident, a disposable camera to take pictures, emergency flares to signal other drivers, and a first aid kit to start medical treatment until the ambulance arrives.
Never assume your cell phone will do the job. It could be damaged in the crash.

Know Your Insurance Coverage
Review your insurance coverage every so often to make sure it provides adequate coverage for your current vehicles and drivers. Verify that your deductible is reasonable and check into the particulars of the policy.
For example, some policies do not cover the cost of a rental car while your vehicle is being fixed. Adding rental vehicle coverage may only be a few dollars each month. See if the policy will cover legal fees in case you are drawn into a lawsuit over an accident.

Maintain Your Vehicle's Safety Systems
Keep your vehicle's safety systems in working order. You want them to respond as expected in case you are in an accident.
For example, you may have an occasional signal from the airbag system. Don't ignore it.
Have an automotive technician check to make sure the airbags are working properly. Other systems to check include your brake pads, anti-lock braking system, seat belts, and driver assistance technology.
